When the sky would start to change from blue to pink, we’d eat the lunch we’d bought from the nearby vegan café and sit on the end of the small pier. The sun would get lower in the sky and we’d wait, our heads tilted up, watching. Finally we’d see them- the swallows, diving and swooping, their wings like little boomerangs. Their bodies soared and dropped like missiles, their wings were so still and rigid; black against the sky. They dove and barely skimmed the water, hovering for a split second before snapping up and back and into the sky.
They always seemed so close to falling, on the edge of losing, but they never did.

I absolutely loved the Marc Jacobs collection on Monday night, but I can't really afford to love it too much, so we'll just talk about Marc by Marc.

Loved loved loved the giant hair bows, bright colors and all the ethnic/graphic print mixing...
Reminds me of the bubblegum suburban culture of my golden youth and now I have this on repeat in my head, in the best possible way:

The Village!

"A seaside holiday resort that serves as a prison for retired spies, combined with trippy 60s phsychedelia" inspired by the cult British tv show, the Prisoner, was the kooky reference for Karen Walker's Spring 2010 show. All Edwardian seaside with lots of khaki, stripes on stripes, pop prints and flashes of yellow, these were the kind of looks that made you want to fast-forward to May and hit the boardwalk by the beach, ice cream and sandcastle-building tools in hand, stormy weather be damned. Equally fabulous were the two styles of shoes Karen Walker debuted in collaboration with Pointer-- the Alice boat shoe and the Caz desert shoe; quirky classics in KW's signature pallete of mustards and blues in canvas and leather. But my favorite part of the show, aside from all the charming looks? A soundtrack that relied heavily on none other than Fleetwood Mac's Tusk; "Don't tell me that you love me, just tell me that you want me!"

Creepy Pretty!

I walked four blocks in wind and rain from the office to the ballroom where Cynthia Rowley was showing her spring 2010 show, and I was pretty much in a bad mood the whole walk. "Why the hell am I doing this to myself?" I thought, as my mascara dripped down my wind-slapped face. Rain + Fashion Week are pretty much par for the course by now --it's a cruel joke the fashion Gods like to play on editors every season. Still, schlepping four blocks in stilettos without an umbrella to a show, ugh, it's ALMOST enough to make me question my whole belief system. That is, until I got to the show, sat in my seat, and looked around- Gotham Ballroom was draped in drop-cloths Phantom of the Opera-style, and a look at the show's liner notes disclosed something to the effect of "setting: an abandoned ballroom, occupants whereabouts unknown." Ooooh, intriquing. The lights dimmed, whimsical-spooky Tim Burton music was cued and a giant cloth fell from the ceiling onto the runway, exposing an ornate chandelier suspended above. As the first model walked down the runway in a gorgeously dishelved ivory dress soaked with inky stains, I realized that this whole thing was about to get very creepy, and I couldn't have been any happier. So, Cynthia Rowley, thanks for the perfectly timely reminder as to why we run from show to show in a chaotic mania-- It's those 15 minutes that transport and transfix, making us forget that our shoes are wet, our feet hurt, and we're exhausted.
